Hi,

 Here there are the answers to the i18n question. If you cannot get the 
files from the KDE CVS HEAD to take a look at that, let me know. 
Dave, it looks that their solution does not use gettext, which was one 
of your concerns.

We do have some i18n in the www module but Chris Howells was the one
that put it all together so he would know all the details but
basically we have a script /www/media/makemessages.sh that creates the
.pot files for translation and the functions used in the PHP seem to
be in /www/media/includes/functions.inc.

Have a poke around in the code and if you have any questions I'll
answer what I can or hopefully Chris is around somewhere. :)

From what I know, the system uses standard .po(t) files but does not use 
xgettext to extract and does not use gettext either (as it is supposed 
not to 
be a standard feature of LA(M)P servers.)

If you want to see a translated site, you should look at KDE Women: 
www/areas/women

As for more advanced questions, sorry, I cannot answer either.
