The two designs can be merged pretty easily. That's not a big problem.

The "Applications" menu makes sense. How many people actually check a "More" 
link unless it's a news article? "More" seems, to me, to lessen the 
importance/value of whatever is placed under it. A "Just stick it there!," if 
you will.

I think the hardest part of Américo's design will be making the page without 
using one or two LARGE images. I'm pretty certain the color fade can be done 
( http://www.alistapart.com/d/customcorners2/step2.4.html ). I see 13 
individual images with the base design. I'd suggest NOT allowing those images 
to surpass a combined total of 75KB. This should be possible with a number of 
color tricks and using certain image formats (wish we could use SVG... 
sigh...).

Anyway, those are my thoughts.
