XHTML doesn't really bring much to the table for me,
it's just a more restrictive/more rational HTML.  

However, CSS really opened my eyes.  You mean that
instead of throwing transparent pixels around, I can
use the margin and padding attributes!?  And it will
make my pages smaller!?  And I can do nice text
effects without using rollover images!?

I liked it enough that I decided to officially drop
netscape 4 and IE 4 support once it dropped below 2%
of our users.  The site still pretty much works for
them, but it doesn't look so hot anymore.
