Hi everyone,
It's no secret that I have some grand goals for the kdewebdev.org site. I
don't want "just a web site" and I don't want just an "exemplary site". I
want an exemplary site that integrates with the our objectives to enhance our
presentation, enhance user support and create an exemplary developer support
system that enhances the productivity and accessability of our project. In
short, this site should become a part of what people look at when they study
the success of Quanta. As such we need to have several things in place.
1) We need to have at least 4-6 active developers to distributed the load and
the good thing is with over a dozen subscribers that should be easy.
2) The site should be easy to maintain in order to keep our developer numbers
high.
3) We will require a lot of attention to what is going on which means either I
clear my calendar or I add a project manager...
I'd like to introduce David Joham as the new project manager for this site. I
spoke with David last night on the phone and feel very fortunate to have him
in this position. He has had to clear his other obligations to be able to
take this on. David has a lot of experience with OSS projects. He has been
the project maintainer of "XML for <SCRIPT>" since 2000, which is a
Javascript XML parser and he maintains the web site. (xmljs.sf.net) He has
also been a project contributor on the extremely popular Frozen Bubble. Of
course where I know him from is his work on the Javascript DTEP which has
been pout on hold until some parser improvements, and... he is also one of
our largest sponsoring contributors to the Quanta project.
Professionally David works for HP as an embedded systems engineer. When he
went to work there he didn't like the support pages and wanted them to be
XHTML compliant. The initial response was "we have pages that work". If
you're happy those pages support Konqueror you can thank David. Every mid to
high range LaserJet now has XHTML 1.0 strict compliant web pages and
(starting soon) documentation that specifically mentions Konqueror as a
supported browser. Apparently HP has taken notice and made the project a case
study for other such projects.
If there is any area that David comes up less than totally ideal in it's that
PHP is not his main language. He primarily works with Java and Javascript and
is somewhat familiar with PHP and C++. I don't see that as a problem though
because he understands good programming technique and good XHTML design. Most
importantly, David doesn't need to be a programmer here because oversight and
managing can absorb time pretty easily. I know. I want him to be continually
looking at the big picture.
I will continue to be involved in the project. Of course the over all
specifications are mine but I don't want to deal with the day to day details.
That's for David. If David feels he needs to ask me a question he will. I
will also be laying out the database and making some contributions in the
developer section. My believe is that we need a team momentum driven by good
leadership like David to accomplish great things. I'm still in the process of
delivering a detailed package of site objectives to him today. I expect it
will take this week to sort out a few things but that things will begin to
happen rather quickly pretty soon.
Please join me in welcoming David Joham and let's get some activity and
discussion here. If you would introduce yourself to David on the list it will
be helpful for him to see what our team consists of.
