Hi Everyone,
George has been kind enough to respond to my request for a private Jabber
server on site. Of course you can use the address to talk with anyone but
only those people developing the site or developing on Quanta will be
authorized. That means that if you're working on one of these two areas you
can have a prestigious yourname at jabber.kdewebdev.org address, sure to be the
envy of all lesser geeks everywhere. ;-)
There are a few caveats. First, I've had problems in the past with this. It
appears to be working now but I haven't really stress tested it, so if you
encounter problems there is an email address for Andrew, George's tech who
works on the Jabber server. Another is that I personally like an email record
of the things that are happening as they can be searched and referenced. The
idea of providing this is to quickly fine tune interactions where it is
beneficial. if the group needs to know an important development it needs to
be posted to the mailing list. Finally, I'll have mine on. I'm
eric at jabber.kdewebdev.org. Just remember that even though I'm on line 24/7
doesn't mean I'm at my desk, and if I am at my desk it doesn't mean I have
lots of social time. Others, like Andras, are on metered connections and will
only want to use Jabber where it serves a quick and immediate purpose. It's
probably a good practice because you can shoot an hour chatting pretty easy.
The other thing that I hope this provides for us is a useful service for group
chats. We'll see how it works. You can use Kopete, SIM or another Jabber
client of your choosing. One thing it recommends you do once you're signed up
is to change your password. Because this does not seem to be supported with
Kopete Andrew sent me the raw packet format to use from within Kopete. It
does allow for raw packets of XML to be sent.
<iq type='set' to='jabber.kdewebdev.org'>
<query xmlns='jabber:iq:register'>
<username>user</username>
<password>newpassword</password>
</query>
</iq>
I want to stress that you will have to wait for me to approve your request for
an account. This means you can pretty much forget it from late tonight (PST
aka GMT-8) to tomorrow evening when I get in and Sunday until around 6 PM.
Just be patient. ;-)
(Actually I may set David up to authorize...)
One other thing I want mention is if you haven't already gotten an account on
the server you can do so at http://kittyhooch.com/kdewebdev.php.
I hope everyone has a productive and/or fun weekend!
